As you’ve read the title, I’m sure you’re as excited to read our list of 6 Shows Like Brooklyn Nine-Nine as we at The Hollywood Tribune family are to share it with you! Right now, there are a lot of sitcoms running but few shows have had an impact like Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Since its release in 2013, the popularity of this show has grown immensely. The show’s writing and individual performances have made the show a modern classic according to its fans.
While thinking about what to recommend, the first show that comes to my mind is for sure Parks and Recreation. There’s a valid reason for that, as the show is co-created by Michael Schur (also co-creator of Brooklyn Nine-Nine). This comedy series is about the Parks Department of Pawnee, Indiana starring the phenomenal Amy Poehler (as Leslie Knope) as a mid-level perky bureaucrat and has a supporting cast that includes Rashida Jones, Paul Schneider, Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, Adam Scott and Chris Pratt among others.
This series follows Amy’s character Leslie and her group to make their town a more beautiful place. The supporting cast is a hilarious bunch with their sense of humour along the same lines of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. This series, since its inception, has become a sitcom with social commentary where each character has a unique way of adding humour. To some, it may remind them of “The Office”, but Parks and Recreation does have a heart and mind of his own. Having a lot of similarities with Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks and Recreation definitely had to be included on our list of 6 Shows Like Brooklyn Nine-Nine!
5. Silicon Valley
This show does not have sneaky cops or hard-nosed detectives like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, but it stands with its head held high when it comes to delivering sardonic humour. This comedy series set in Silicon Valley is about five men who founded a startup company. The story follows the problems that start-ups face and the work, disappointment and failure it faces to become successful.
The sitcom features a cast that includes genius coder, Richard played by Thomas Middleditch, T.J. Miller as Erlich Bachman playing a snobby arrogant innovator. They carry the entire show, with Josh Brener, Martin Starr and Kumail Nanjiani as supporting actors. The story is original, smart and more importantly believable with its heart lying in witty one-liners and the struggle of these five men. Silicon Valley is an informative show about the inner workings of the tech industry, and if you loved the nerdy stuff in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” you will surely enjoy this. Although a little different from Brooklyn-Nine-Nine, Silicon Valley deserved a mention on our list of 6 Shows Like Brooklyn Nine-Nine!
4. The Good Place
It is a feel-good comedy with a beautiful plot and a talented cast. Once again, created by Michael Schurs, who is known for creating witty comedies that have diverse characters, and The Good Place is no exception to that rule. Kristen Bell stars as Eleanor Shellstop, who has died and has been sent to The Good Place as a case of mistaken identity. She was brought to The Good Place in place of another Eleanor Shellstop who lived her life by serving others.
Now, Kristen Bell has to deal with The Good Place, not having lived as a good person. The story follows Shellstop as she meets many people and goes through many strange, humourous situations that take places due to her presence. Other main characters include Michael, an immortal architect who has created this Good Place, Chidi, a former ethics professor who has been matched with Eleanor as her soulmate. Our list of 6 Shows Like Brooklyn Nine-Nine would be incomplete without The Good Place.
The cast also has Tahini, a former socialite and philanthropist, Jianyu, a former Buddhist and Janet, an artificial intelligence there to help them all. The show is filled with pop culture and references to popular philosophies and other ethical dilemmas. This show is forking good!
A comedy about a group of employees who work at cloud 9, big-box store in St. Louis, Missouri. In the pilot two employees and along with them we get to know about the rest of the staff working there. The story follows Amy Dubanowski, a floor supervisor, and her staff as they try to get through days working in Cloud 9 with an eclectic group of people as colleagues and customers.
You as a viewer will be pulled in to story filled with strange characters, humour and whose lives you want to know more about. This store does have a lot more to offer. Superstore deserved a spot on our list of 6 Shows Like Brooklyn Nine-Nine!
2. Veronica Mars
If you enjoyed Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s perfect blend of crime and comedy, this may be your time to check out Veronica Mars. This show has been described as a mystery wrapped in a comedy inside a teen drama. The story follows the story of Veronica Mars, played by Kristen Bell, who is a high school student, whose father is a private investigator.
She uses her knowledge to do some investigation independently. But her life turns upside down when her best friend is murdered, and she takes up the mantle of the investigation into whether the right killer is caught or not. She accompanied by her friends and family have a sarcastic humour that offsets the dark plot of the show. Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Veronica Mars fall into different genres but with their similar themes and clever humour have common grounds than what we want to believe. Believe it or not, Veronica Mars was an easy decision to make when it came to whether or not to include this on our list of 6 Shows Like Brooklyn Nine-Nine!
1. Reno 911
Comedy and cops seem like a rare combination, and maybe that’s the reason why we love Brooklyn Nine-Nine in the first place. Reno 911 is a mockumentary-style parody of law enforcement documentary shows (“Cops”), and it is just as ridiculous as you can very well imagine. In this series, we follow inefficient cops, as they keep falling in trouble while answering 911 calls.
While in this series the dialogues are improvised (which is quite impressive), the incidents are scripted. The show evolves from a spoof into something much bigger and better, which as a result stays with you for a long time. As the camera follows the policeman, we overhear the jokes which they make amongst themselves and sometimes they are politically incorrect (dealing with topics ranging from drug abuse to paedophilia). Adding Reno 911 to our list of 6 shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine was a no-brainer!
The show is also excellent at integrating guest stars into its action and when added to its outstanding cast only makes the show even more amazing.
We have come to the end of this list, which featured “6 shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine”. Do stay tuned to The Hollywood Tribune for such lists and more from Hollywood and Beyond.
