Freaks – You’re One of Us is an upcoming action comedy film on Netflix; the German Superhero movie is written by Marc O Seng and is directed by Felix Binder.
Marvel and DC have given us this idea of superhero movies that are all serious and have a humongous budget and a billion-dollar appearance on the box office. Still, some movies show us that you don’t need to be a tech billionaire or an alien to be a hero and Freaks—You’re One of Us is just that movie.
This German superhero movie follows the story of ordinary people who realize they have powers and begin to unravel a bigger conspiracy surrounding their lives.
As far as we can see this movie is not a one-dimensional superhero movie, while the comical aspect of the film is for the entertainment of the audience, the everyday life of ordinary people and how small differences and abilities can bring about such a drastic change in the presence of a person, helps us understand the social standing of an ordinary person in a world devoid of powers.

The plot of Freaks – You’re One of Us.
The official synopsis of the movie given on the Netflix website goes as:
Tipped by a mysterious tramp, a meek fry cook discovers she has superpowers — and uncovers an unsavoury, widespread conspiracy.
According to the trailer released by Netflix and the logline of the movie, we can clearly see what the film is all about and what direction it follows.
The film follows the story of a young mom, Wendy(Cornelia Gröschel), who is a fast-food worker; Wendy discovers that she has superpowers that were suppressed throughout her life due to the medication that she used. As she begins to explore these powers, she learns that she has super strength and is also invulnerable.
An encounter with a homeless man who says “You’re one of Us” and the discovery of her co-worker Elmar (Tim Oliver Schultz), possessing electrical powers, who wants a superhero name and calls himself Electro Man, makes Wendy aware that she is not alone. Other ordinary people possess superpowers too.
Soon, the ragtag team of powered people is brought together by Marek (Wotan Wilke Möhring), the homeless man. These people who have no idea how to deal with their situations start to question the uses of their powers and the what consequences using these skills for a purpose would have on their personal lives.
And eventually, just like every other superhero movie, a mysterious organization is revealed with weirdly slow-talking scientists, the powered people are now caught between the crosshairs of the organization as they deal with the fact that their powers may have come from the very same organization.
Though the logline of the movie has some different things to say, it explores the features of a world where usage of prescription drugs has increased exponentially. For every behavioural disorder, there is some drug.
The synopsis, according to it reads like this, “What if these drugs are meant to do more than regulate performance by suppressing anger and anxiety? What if they are capable of much – much – more than that? When a young, suburban mother stops taking her medication, she discovers that she has strange, supernatural powers. But being a real-life superheroine isn’t easy. Especially when you have to look after a family.”

The trailer of the movie dropped yesterday on August 12, the almost 2-minute trailer reveals a lot more about the film than the official synopsis does. You can watch the trailer of “Freaks – You’re One of Us” here:
The trailer ends with exploring a big conspiracy around the powers of the various characters and what are the consequences of their abilities and how they will affect their lives moving ahead.
The movie is an “action-comedy,” so we can expect to see a very comical tone in the movie, and it will most probably resemble something like Misfits rather than the super-serious superhero movies we are used to watching.
The trailer of the movie looks fantastic, and if the movie sticks to the story and the portrayal in the trailer, it can be a big hit for Netflix.
Also, try not to confuse this upcoming movie with Freaks, which is another superhero-horror movie that came out in 2018.
