Hannibal, once cancelled by NBC was believed to be gone forever, but 5 years later, it looks like we might get another season.
NBC’s Hannibal is one of the TV shows that might not have been appealing to the viewers during its run but over the years has gained a lot of following.
The show was highly critically acclaimed when it was released, and the number of people that watched it during its original run had nothing but praise for it.
Created by Brian Fuller, the show brought to life one of the most iconic characters in psychological horrors, Hannibal Lecter. The credit for the character goes to the amazing Mads Mikkelsen, but the vision for the show still belongs to Fuller, and after five years it feels like Hannibal Season 4 is earning some traction, and we might get to see him again on the screen.
Why is Hannibal suddenly in the mainstream after 5 years of cancellation?
The show garnered quite a cult-like fan following over the years, and the fans have been expecting the show to return for a very long time, but there was no hope until the events of this year.
The beginning of all the season 4 talks came after Netflix bought the streaming rights for Hannibal in June and all three seasons of the show were available in the US. The series returned to mainstream media after this and rumours of a Hannibal season 4 were fuelled after an Instagram post by Mads Mikkelsen himself.
The showrunners, Bryan Fuller and also cast members such as Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen have always been open to Hannibal returning to TV. However, Hannibal season 4 always remained a prospect that was never realised.
While the demand for Hannibal season 4 is gaining traction, there is no definite news yet of the show returning, and everything to this point is mere speculation.
Hopefully, Netflix might revive the show just as they have done for so many others.
A Quick Recap Before Hannibal Season 4
Hannibal is a horror-thriller Psychological drama that premiered back in 2013 and was cancelled after 3 seasons.
The show which is loosely based on a Thomas Harris’ 1981 novel “Red Dragon” centred around a psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter who is also a cannibal (We know it rhymes) and a detective Will Graham.
The series in its horror like manner follows the FBI agent Graham, a man with an uncanny ability to empathize with serial killers and psychopaths.
During the pursuit of a complex serial killer, Will approaches Lecter for help, from which point the two develop a partnership and start catching villains together. Will remains unaware of Hannibal’s cannibalistic nature, and also the fact that he is one of the Serial Killers being pursued by the FBI
The show premiered for three seasons and NBC made the move to cancel the show due to low viewership, but despite this; the show earned many awards and was critically appraised.
What Could Hannibal Season 4 be About?
Well, the creator of the show Bryan Fuller in his recent statement said that he is “very hopeful” on the prospect of another season. Fuller went onto say that he has many ideas as to the direction the show can take and he has discussed these ideas with the cast members and showrunners and is sure that those ideas can come to fruition if the show returns.
Until the show gets an official confirmation, the whole idea of another season is mere speculation, so we cannot say what story Hannibal Season 4 will follow but there have been many appeals from fans of the show to bring in the “Silence of the Lambs” storyline which is perhaps the most popular book in the Hannibal Lecter series.
We can just hope till then that the show returns for another season and Netflix, our “favourite tv series” saviours come to its aid.
