Interview With Sakoya
Tell me how you got into music and what started your musical journey?
Sure. I’ve done music since I was a little girl and I’ve always been around music growing up but I was always really a great writer. I would write poetry and eventually as I got older I decided to test out recording music and after I recorded, I knew eventually that it was something that I was supposed to be doing a long time ago. It was just history from there and I’ve recorded music and I loved it and I’m still doing it today.
Tell me a little about the kind of poetry that you write!
Oh, okay! The poetry that I used to write, I kinda wanna say it was more about earthly things, experiences and love *chuckles* It’s so crazy, when you’re a little kid, you think you know so much about love. So, I was writing a lot about all of these things. That’s mainly what I was writing about.
Do you still write poems or are you focusing mainly on writing the lyrics for your songs?
I honestly feel like the lyrics of my music is poetry for me, in my own way. So, I don’t necessarily write exact poetry anymore. I do kinda stick with writing music, but the lyrics for my songs I feel like, are like poetry, of my life!
Congratulations on the launch of your family label! I would love to hear you talk about JT Entertainment.
So, my family basically founded their own label. My father JoJo Hailey, who is an artist, an incredible artist from the legendary group called Jodeci. He decided he wanted to start a label and you know, have an umbrella for his family that was doing music as well, which includes me, my sister Kayla Tiffany and my cousin Devin Hailey.
We all do music and he just decided to start the label basically to help us find our way in the music industry and to do it through our family label rather than doing it through any other label. So, that’s basically how it started!
Tell me a little about ‘Self Love’ and the deeper meaning behind it! Why do you think self-love is important?
I wrote ‘Self Love’ a couple of months ago. It was a time in my life when I had to self reflect on my relationships that kind of went bad. I was inspired to write the song through heartbreak. I felt like, with the heartbreak, I was wanting to be loved so much that I had to dig a little deeper and love myself.
Self love for me is basically about taking care of your own needs and not sacrificing your well-being to please others and it could also mean, you know, not just getting to a place where you love yourself but learning to love yourself in the place that you’re in, in your life.
Who do you like listening to and what genres do you prefer?
I definitely love R&B, I listen to a lot of Summer Walker and I love Hip-Hop. Most recently I’ve been listening to Lil’ baby and Drake, of course.
What would you like to say to artists who have just started out in the music industry or those who are looking forward to?
I would tell them to be very passionate about it, be devoted, stay consistent and don’t give up. It’s gonna be a lot of no, but there are a lot of yesses as well. Mainly, you just have to believe in yourself. And then everything else will fall in line.
That’s all for this Friday’s Feature and we hope to have you back next week! See you then.
Don’t forget to share this because everyone should listen to “Self Love” at least once. We bet, they’ll put it on repeat.
