19-year-old R&B Pop Artist, Lily Massie has amassed quite the fan following online recently with the release of her new single “Love is Overrated” which released on 10th January last month. She has released yet another song a couple of days back titled “Friends in LA” across various online platforms! By age 11, Lily was rapping and writing her own lyrics, as well as taking private vocal lessons. Talking to The Hollywood Tribune, she said,” I would do freestyles and post them on Twitter and they would almost always kinda blow up! That gave me the confidence to move on to what I really loved, which was singing.”
The Hollywood Tribune had the pleasure of talking to Lily herself about “Love is Overrated” and a few other things! Read the interview below to know the story behind the song and how it came to be!
Tell us a little about yourself and how you got into music!
I’m Lily. I’m a 19-year-old R&B Pop artist from New Jersey living in LA. I’ve been an official artist since I was around 17 years old. I’ve been making music and releasing it since I was 14 though! I’ve been writing songs my whole life and I actually started as a rapper which is what helped me gain all the connections I now have. I would do freestyles and post them to Twitter and they would almost always kinda blow up! That gave me the confidence to move on to what I really loved, which was singing!
We would love to hear about your new single “Love is Overrated” and the ideas behind the song.
“Love is Overrated” is about liking someone so much that you’re completely okay with never dating them. This song is perfect for a one night stand that you caught feelings for and they just don’t feel the same. Sometimes sex is just allowed to be sex and doesn’t have to be anything more.
What were some of the challenges you faced while producing “Love is Overrated”?
Every song you make is a challenge in its own way. You want it to be an exact copy of your heart but you also want it to be a hit that everyone relates to. I think the biggest challenge was making it relatable to the world and yet still relatable to my life.
Who do you like listening to? Who are your favorite artists?
Ariana Grande will forever be my number one. Other than her, I only listen to about 3 artists on repeat. Kehlani, Summer Walker, and SZA!
If you had to list 5 things that you want in your life right now, what would those be?
Definitely Success, Happiness, Inner Peace, Confidence, and Tranquility. Life is stressful and uncertain a lot of the time, especially in a pandemic.
Are you working on anything else that you’d like to talk about?
Well, I just dropped my second single “Friends in LA” featuring my best friend Lilah Gibney. And I’m working on the music videos for all my upcoming singles that will be dropping once a month for the rest of the year 🙂
Do you have any advice for artists who have just started out in the industry or are looking forward to?
The most important thing you need to know is that wanting to be an artist is such a beautiful rare thing. It’s something that not many people can do AND accomplish. It’s driven completely by passion, not even talent. If you love something and really want it, it will happen.
Your work ethic can not lack if you want to be an artist. Listen to your heart, follow your gut and do exactly what you know you were born to do. It’s scary and hard but when you have a passion like us artists do, you should not ever give that up just because of fear. The gift of being an artist that can impact the world is beautiful.
That’s all for this Friday’s Feature and we hope to have you back next week! See you then.
Don’t forget to share this because everyone should listen to “Love is Overrated” at least once. We bet they’ll put it on repeat!
