‘Palm Springs’ is a witty rom-com that is pretty much a deja vu of every other wedding movie you have ever seen before. There are a zillion rom-coms that have surfaced in the recent past, but ‘Palm Springs’ feels like a breath of fresh air in utter chaos.
The film succeeds in bringing a twist to the existing genre as it challenges the pre-existing norms. ‘Palm Springs’ is a well thought out film that is part sci-fi and well, timelessly….romantic!
Being stuck in a day is horrible; it gets worse when you cannot even die. Because every time you close your eyes, you are back to the moment you wake up- on the same day.
Imagine being trapped in a day for eternity with a stranger only to fall in love with them and have the day repeat itself for goodness knows how long. Well, it sounds like a nightmare nobody would want to be stuck in. But for Nyles and Sarah, it really did happen.
The Hulu original film takes us into a time loop through the lives of Nyles (Andy Samberg) and Sarah (Cristin Milioti) who seem to be living in today which was also yesterday with no way of moving into tomorrow.
The plot of this film is centred around the life of a carefree man Nyles, and an eccentric maid of honour, Sarah, as they encounter the change of a lifetime.
At the beginning of the movie, Nyles looks already exhausted, and we cannot figure out why. But in due course of the film, we realize that Nyles is trapped in a time loop on the day of his girlfriend’s best friend’s (Camila Mendez) wedding. The day has been repeating itself for years, and he has lost not only his mojo but also his will to find a way out of the situation.
One of the twisted nights, he gets together with the sister of the bride, Sarah and finds himself being chased by Roy (J.K Simmons) who is heavily armed with bow and arrows. As he runs into an enchanted cave, we see Sarah following him, and they both get stuck in the loop.
Soon the duo finds themselves having fun, pulling pranks, getting to know each other better and living in the day to the fullest, because there’s no tomorrow. Although both of them know that their situation is super complicated, they pretend like everything is okay.

But they find a good reason to get out of bed every day. Since they have each other’s company, time becomes irrelevant until one day when one of them snaps and is now hell-bent on finding a way out.
Being stuck this way, with the same person would eventually get boring, wouldn’t it? Even if the person is pretty much perfect or even your soulmate.
‘Palm Springs’ is one of the most amazing movies which is so well thought out that you cannot miss it. Andy and Cristin make an adorable couple on-screen, and their chemistry is fire.
There’s equal weightage given to both the lead characters and they balance each other out. Apart from a lot of alcohol, drugs, sex and wilderness, the end goal for Nyles and Sarah was not to sleep with each other as both characters go through an evolutionary arch.
They were at a stage higher than their sexual adventures, and by the end of it, they come out to be a more refined version of themselves.
The cinematography is tight and very simple. The use of minimalistic locations to tell the entire story is really cool. The editors of ‘Palm Springs’ deserve a big shoutout as they brought together the best of both worlds- comedy and drama.
This movie will tickle your funny bone and make you think about existentialism, finding your perfect partner and more. It hits a home-run and should definitely make it to your binge list.
However, the question remains-Will they ever see a November 10th? We would honestly love to tell you that, but it is up to you to watch and find out!!
