Our favourite caped crusader is going to back on the big screens! We can’t wait for The Batman to hit cinemas as soon as possible and bring you everything to know about the reboot. We can all argue who our favourite actor is as Batman, but our love for the character itself remains as a whole. Batman is justice.
The movie will be directed by Matt Reeves and stars some of Hollywood’s hottest talent. The film can be said to be similar – but not connected – to this year’s Joker origin story. This time, The Batman costume will be donned by Robert Pattinson.
Zoe Kravitz is roped in to play Selina Kyle aka the Catwoman. We don’t yet know whether she’ll be playing an adversary, love interest, ally, or all of the above. Selina has a complicated history with Bruce Wayne in the comics, and her role in the film could go in any number of directions.
Paul Dano plays the Riddler while Colin Farrell and Andy Serkis will star as The Penguin and Alfred Pennyworth respectively. Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone and Peter Skarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson, a character with no comic book ties who some believe could be a stand-in for Harvey Dent rounds up the stellar cast.
The Batman was scheduled to hit theatres in June 2021 but is predictably delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. It will now premiere in October 2021.
The working title for The Batman, according to Production Weekly, is Vengeance. And it’s pretty apt too, if you have seen the trailer. A debut of the first trailer for the film was released at the DC FanDome event in August 2020.
Talking about The iconic Batman costume and the era in which the movie is set, director Reeves states that “It’s [the costume] very practical, the idea is that [Batman] made it himself. It needs to look like he can move, but it’s still evolving. He’s in Year Two of being Batman.”
“It’s early, and Batman’s still a vigilante,” the directed continued. “[Gotham’s people] wonder, ‘That guy sounds a little dangerous.’ He’s not yet the symbol of hope. He’s still a growing legend. People wonder whether he exists. It’s one of the things he will confront in the story.”
Also talking about where The Batman stands in the movie and where he came from, he continues, “So you start to describe this epic history of corruption in Gotham that you start to understand, ‘Well, where did my family sit in that?’ And in that sense… is a way to take a story, a point-of-view story, and a mystery.”
“It’s got, of course, action, and all that kind of stuff, but at the end of it, it’s incredibly personal for him even though it’s in the story where he’s trying to understand and unravel this mystery.”
The crumbs and pieces thrown at us by The Batman director and cast have definitely made us hungry for more. The pictures revealed of Pattinson as Batman are quintessentially gothic. In the trailer, Riddler nudges and jabs at both Batman and Jim Gordon, leading them to look into a murder or possibly a string of murders. Gotham normally racks up the body count, so don’t be surprised if it’s the latter.
And, surprise, surprise! The Batman is also getting its own spin-off series. The upcoming series will revolve around the Gotham City police department that will exist in the same universe as the upcoming film. The Batman’s director, Matt Reeves, and its producer, Dylan Clark, are both signed on as executive producers. The Hollywood Tribune will write more on the series shortly, but for now, The Batman is front and centre.
