Last year Amazon Prime released their most popular show yet in The Boys, and the show returns one year later with The Boys Season 2.
The show is all about superheroes but not in the conventional way that we are used to, The Boys centres around a group of vigilantes who wage war against the superheroes, who are nothing more but corporate-owned superheroes who are inherently corrupt and egotistical.
The violence, the profanity, and the elite humour made The Boys one of the biggest show for Amazon Prime and one of the most popular series to come out in 2019, so much so, that ahead of The Boys Season 2, the show has already been renewed for a third season.
The show is developed by Eric Kripke and based on a comic book series of the same name created by Darick Robertson and Garth Ennis. The first season of the series premiered on July 26 in 2019.
Release Date and Trailer of The Boys Season 2
The release date of The Boys Season 2 was announced back in June. The season will premiere on Amazon Prime Video with three episodes on September 4 2020.
Though the first season of the show was released altogether as all the eight episodes of the season were released on one date, the second season is going to follow a different format.
Instead of all episodes on one day, we are going to get three episodes on the launch day. Then the rest episodes will be released weekly, every Friday till October 9 2020.
The trailer for the new season dropped on August 4, and you can watch it here:
What happened in Season 1?
The first season of the show centred around Bully Butcher and his ragtag team of vigilantes who decided to take the fight to a corrupt superhero team known as The Seven who are controlled by a corporation.
The show is set in a universe where people with superpowers are deemed as heroes by the public. However, they are actually owned by a powerful corporation known as Vought International. The heroes are the same as any corporate asset; they are marketed and used to make money by the corporation.
The superheroes pretend to be heroic and good to the public, but under all that, most of them are very corrupt and arrogant. The show primarily confuses on a team of superheroes known as the Seven who are the premiere superhero team of Vought Internation, the best of the best superheroes.
The show starts after the girlfriend of Hughie Campbell is killed in a freak accident by one of the members of The Seven, a speedster is known as A-Train, after which Billy Butcher finds him and recruits him in a ragtag team of people who have all been affected due to the superheroes, he calls the team The Boys.
Out of all the Boys, Bully has a deep hatred for all people with superpowers and especially towards Homelander, the leader of the Seven and whom Billy believes to be involved with the disappearance of his wife.
The show follows the conflict between the two groups as tension hits new highs, and both sides suffer some losses.
The two new members of the two rival groups who are in focus are Hughie Campbell and Annie January also known as Starlight, who is the latest recruit in The Seven, while Annie is very hopeful and admired the superheroes for a long time, after joining the seven, she comes to face with their true selves.
Hughie and Annie meet and get into a relationship, though it doesn’t end up nicely when Annie learns that Butcher was using their relationship to get information out of Annie.
The Cast of The Boys
Most of the core cast members from the first season are set to return in The Boys Season 2. Karl Urban (Billy Butcher), Tomer Capon’s Frenchie, Jack Quaid (Hughie), and Laz Alonso’s Marvin T. Milk coming back to give us some more vigilante violence.
The same cannot be said for the seven, but the remaining alive members of the superhero team are set to be back, including; Antony Starr as Homelander, Erin Moriarty as Starlight, Chace Crawford as The Deep.
Also, Dominique McElligott returns in The Boys Season 2 as Queen Maeve, alongside Jessie T Usher as A-Train and the mysterious Black Noir who is portrayed by Nathan Mitchell but he neither speaks nor takes off his mask so they can put anybody under there and nobody will know the difference.
Several other members of the cast are set to reprise their roles like the enhanced Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) who is an ally of the Boys.
There will also be some new addition to the cast list of The Boys Season 2 as Patton Oswalt (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) Joins in a super-secret role, Claudia Deurmit as a young congresswoman and Goran Visnjic as a church leader.
Though the most significant addition to the cast list of The Boys Season 2 will be Aya Cash, who is set to play the role of a new superhero, Stormfront, who will be joining the Seven. In the comics, Stormfront is a guy who is a Neo-Nazi, he is always at odds with the Seven due to his views, and he is also the sworn enemy of The Boys.
What can we expect from The Boys Season 2? (Spoilers Ahead)
The first season ends with quite a flare as the Seven face their individual issues and are more vulnerable than ever, but The Boys are not much far as they too are almost broken up, but the person who is most in danger is Billy Bucher.
The last we saw of him was Homelander (who has pretty much turned psychotic and unstable at this point) drop, Billy, on the doorstep of a house, the show ends with his wife coming out of the house, who he believed to be dead and she also has a son with Homelander, who possess at least some of the same powers as him.
As far as we can see in the trailer of The Boys Season 2, The Boys are now taking the fight to the superheroes, and we can expect the second season of the show to be much more violent and brutal. Though the plot of The Boys Season 2 is yet unknown if the trailer is any indication of what’s coming, prepare for a lot of action sequences and weird subplots, not to mention some new faces that we will be seeing.
Also, Jensen Ackles of Supernatural is confirmed to appear in the third season and the work on the season is already underway.
