The New Mutants has been subject to delays over and over again over the past few years, and yet, is surprisingly one of the few movies not to be affected by the delays caused due to the Corona-virus.
The New Mutants will now release next month, at least that’s the official consensus, but we have been at this point too many times to know that until the movie actually hits the theatres, we can’t be sure.
For a movie that begun production in 2017 and finished filming in September of the same year, it has been too long a wait for viewers eagerly waiting for the movie. At some point this year, many had even given up hope that the film will actually be released and would end up being shelved. But here we are, just four weeks away from the release.
Well, three years is a long time for everyone to have caught up to all the information on the movie. Although, there might be some who don’t know what the film is all about or those who want to catch up with the newest rumors and fan theories.
Luckily, we have compiled everything that you would want to know about The New Mutants, so dive in and enjoy.
The New Mutants Plot
While the official premise of the movie says, “Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.”, there is not much known about the actual plot of the movie. All the trailers and spots only show the characters in action rather than addressing the plot.
But don’t worry, we are going to jump to the 1982 comic series, from which the movie takes inspiration for some insight.
The New Mutants comics created by Chris Claremont was the very first spinoff to the X-Men series (Uncanny X-Men), the series followed a group of teenagers rather than the adults in the main X-Men comics and was more mystic and dark than the main series.
The New Mutants movie takes inspiration from a particular storyline in the comic series known as “The Demon Bear Saga” (The New Mutants #18-20, 1984).
The story follows the group of mutants in conflict with an evil force that takes an animal form, a Demon Bear, the force is there to kill Mirage after murdering her family. The mutants fight the evil force not only on the physical plane but also on the psychic plane.
The Demon Bear was only depicted as two massive sets of claws, mad eyes and fanged teeth floating around in the darkness. While the trailer themselves haven’t shown us the Demon Bear clearly, this is probably the direction in which the movie is going to go.
If they go according to the comics, The New Mutants is going to be a fantastic blend of superhero and horror.
The New Mutants Release Date
The New Mutants original release date was April 2018; then, it was February 2019, then August 2019 and then April 2020.
Well, if you have known about the movie, I’m sure you are familiar with all the reasons that the movie kept on delaying the reshoots. In short, there were issues with Fox, and then the acquisition of Fox by Disney.
For a moment, there was also speculation that the movie was not going to the theaters at all and will be released on Disney’s streaming service, Disney+, but they were quickly shunned down, and the movie is still confirmed for a theatrical release.
The New Mutants will (hopefully) hit the theaters on August 28, 2020, but it might change as many movies that were supposed to launch in August have been delayed.
The Cast of The New Mutants
The movie features all teenage characters similar to the earliest comic versions of The New mutants.
Here is the list of the cast members and the description of their roles in the movie:
Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin, a.k.a Magik, the sister of the famous X-Men member Colossus. Magik has multiple powers at her disposal; she can turn herself into metal the same way as her brother, carries a powerful magical sword known as the Soulsword.
She is also a master sorcerer and can access a dimension known as Limbo, which allows her to teleport (Earth to Limbo and from there to another place). Unlike Nightcrawler, she can teleport to any place or dimension and even between different times.
Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair, a.k.a Wolfsbane, a Scottish girl who has the power to mutate into a wolf, which comes with its fast reflexes and enhanced senses. She is also very troubled as she is highly religious and tries to confront her inherent sinfulness.
Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie, a.k.a Cannonball, a mutant with powers to propel himself at high speeds, during which he also becomes invulnerable. Guthrie’s lower half looks like a rocket exhaust when he is using his power.
Henry Zaga as Roberto de Costa, a.k.a Sunspot, a rich mutant from Brazil who has to absorb and channel solar power. When Sunspot uses his powers, his appearance becomes like that of a void; dark and covered with spots.
Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar, a.k.a Mirage, a Native American mutant with the power to project the fears and desires of people psionically as very realistic illusions.
Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes, a mentor as well as doctor to the teenagers, and is also a mutant, who can create powerful force fields around her for protection.
The movie is connected to the main X-Men franchise, but it will have no cameos from any characters from the X-Men movies.
The plot is so secretive that even till now, the main villain of the movie remains a secret, it could be the demon bear, but there have been some speculations that it is going to be the monstrous reality-warping mutant, Proteus.
