UFC has been faithful to its promise of never stopping to run live events, even with the stakes at a rising high due to the coronavirus pandemic. Despite cancelling a handful of shows early on, the Largest organization of Mixed Martial Arts in the world has held events just about every week since May 9.
The promotion of UFC 252 was initially planning on another event taking place on August 15 at 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland. However, UFC confirmed in June that the card for the show in Dublin was indefinitely postponed due to the current pandemic.
A UFC Heavyweight Championship trilogy match between current two-time champion Stipe Miocic and former champion Daniel Cormier (who is also a former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion) is what we expect to see as the main event. The pair first met at UFC 226 on July 7, 2018, when the then light heavyweight champion Cormier knocked out Miocic in the first round and captured the heavyweight title.
Their second fight took place at UFC 241 in August of 2019 when Miocic got his revenge via a fourth-round knockout.
A bantamweight match between Pedro Munhoz and former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar was strongly linked to UFC 251. It was announced on July 6th that the match between Munhoz and Edgar was scrapped as Munhoz had tested positive for COVID-19. The fight was then rescheduled for the mega event of UFC 252.
A light-heavyweight rematch between Magomed Ankalaev and Ion Cuțelaba is also among the fights expected to take place at UFC 252. The pair first met at UFC Fight Night: Benavidez vs Figueiredo, when Ankalaev won with a controversial knockout. This match-up was initially expected to take place at UFC 249’s original date in April.
Unfortunately, Ankalaev was forced to pull out from UFC 2525 because of travel restrictions in place all over the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
